ABOUT GRADES 4 TO 9 ...

GRADES 4 TO 7

These grades are very successful in the home schooling environment and we are pleased with how well parents cope with them. The Teachers Manual gives instructions on the teaching of the subjects and provides a work schedule for each week. Our teachers set and mark the exams and write the reports. Exams are written at midyear and year-end. Registration can take place at any time in the year - pupils simply start from Week 1 and write exams after weeks 18 and 36.

The work in these grades is aligned to Education Department regulations and many of the regular school textbooks are used. Particular emphasis is placed on the acquisition of essential skills in languages, mathematics, science, biology and geography. We aim to provide these children with a strong foundation for later years, rather than simply teaching facts. Each grade covers the following subjects:
Exam subjects - English, Afrikaans, Mathematics, Science/Biology, Geography. Additional subjects (non-exam) Life Orientation, Art and Culture, Social Science, Technology, Zulu (Grades 5, 6).

GRADES 8 AND 9
The work in these grades is more advanced and many parents feel daunted by the task. Most parents, however, succeed very well: they study up on the work themselves and employ the services of a teacher for areas where they feel unable to cope. Many parents send their children to a qualified Maths, Science, Accountancy or Afrikaans teacher once a week for marking, explaining new concepts and monitoring progress. We appeal to parents not to neglect their children’s education by leaving them to cope alone or sending them to a small school where the teaching is inadequate.
