GRADE 1 TO 3
ABOUT CLONARD EARLY LEARNING . . .
EDUCATION TODAY
An article appeared in a newspaper THE DENVER POST on 19 May 2007
entitled “21 st Century Skills” by Beverly Ingle, President of Colorado
Education Association: “Thirty or forty years ago, we knew the kinds of
jobs our students would have. Today, we are preparing students for jobs
that don’t yet exist.” This is an intimidating thought, but the question
we must ask is: - How do we prepare our children for the rapidly
changing world in which we live? How do we produce high quality
graduates with skills that offer the greatest potential for employment?
Knowledge and skills have escalated at an alarming rate during the last
fifty years. We do not know what our children will do for a living, but
in order to produce brilliant scientists, thinkers and innovators we
have to start at the beginning. We know that early learners are better
learners so we must start early to teach them basic skills because there
can be no advancement without an ability to read, to write and to
calculate. The brain has untold potential to develop. Let us work
towards creating original thinkers; let us get just one foot on the
ladder. Clearly our immediate task in this situation is to develop
intellectual skills in a steady, methodical manner in order to build a
strong foundation.
GRADES 1, 2 AND 3
(Foundation Phase)
This is
the right place to start. Young children benefit enormously from the
one-on-one attention they get from their parents in a non-threatening
environment. The CLONARD curriculum is well supported with detailed instructions
on what to do. Everything is provided in one box weighing about 9
kilograms, which can be collected from us or sent to you. The Teachers
Manual in each grade tells you exactly how to teach your child to read,
to write and to do number work. In addition you can speak to a qualified
teacher at any time. The Parents Guide deals with topics like
socialisation, sport, music, artwork, crafts, poetry, baking, sewing,
woodwork, etc. Assessment is done by our teachers at the end of the
course. Parents fill in a daily record book documenting the child’s
progress throughout the year. This book is sent back to us, together
with the completed tests in reading, writing and number work. Our
teachers will assess the pupil and provide a report and a certificate
of achievement.
The
Grade R is combined with Grade 1 so the course is suitable for children
from 5 years of age. Reading is taught by the phonetic method with between 25
and 30 phonetic reading books in each of the 3 grades. Registration can
take place at any time during the year.
