When deciding to start homeschooling most parents have the same questions (and get asked the same questions by friends and family). We have addressed the most common questions in blog posts over the past year. For our last blog post of the year, we thought it was appropriate to put together a handy list of common questions, summaries of their answers and links to the full posts.
Below are some of the most common questions that parents have when considering homeschooling.
1. Is homeschooling legal?
Yes, homeschooling is most certainly legal in South Africa.
2. How much does homeschooling cost?
That depends upon how you go about homeschooling, but the most simple answer is that is very often costs less than mainstream school education.
3. What about socialisation?
By far the most common question that parents get asked by family and friends when they say that they are considering homeschooling their kids. Basically, you have nothing to worry about in this regard. As long as you are not living in a completely isolated place your children will naturally socialise with others, often in more healthy ways than they would at school.
4. Do we have to do homework?
No, you do not.
5. How do we register with the DoE?
We provide you with all the forms and help you to complete them. We give you the contact details and address to send them to and we give you advice every step of the way. The DoE knows our curriculum well and we make sure to be in line with all their requirements – so you will not have any problems.
6. What is CAPS?
A guideline for the subjects, pass marks, syllabus and assessments for each grade and subject prescribed by the Department of Education.
